Five alleged members of an organized crime gang died Monday morning after a half-hour gunfight following an ambush of soldiers in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
That increased the December death toll to 17 in a week of gang-related violence in the city, a federal source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
At about 8:30 a.m., gunmen attacked a military convoy traveling through an area known as “Caracol,” or snail in Spanish, located at Anahuac and the Airport highways.
“Gunmen fired on the soldiers,” the source said. “All of them were very young men.”
Traffic was described as heavy during the gunfight due to the early hour, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths to motorists.
Soldiers cordoned off the area, which was reopened to traffic at about 10 a.m. after authorities investigated the incident.
The source said soldiers confiscated four assault weapons, ammunition, radios and other unspecified military hardware.
“In the most recent clashes, we’ve noticed the majority of gunmen are young people between 16 to 25 years old,” the federal source said.
“In fact, we believe they are inexperienced in handling weapons and training seems very minimal.”
Violent erupted in Nuevo Laredo after officials stated a truce between the Gulf Cartel and Zetas was broken.
The following is a recap of the violence this month:
Early December: In the Anahuac neighborhood, an 18-year-old man was killed in a shootout with soldiers. Other gunmen fled, leaving behind a vehicle and weapons.
Dec. 11: Authorities found the bodies of two men on the Riverside Highway in Parás, Nuevo Leon. The mutilated bodies were reported around 10:30 a.m.
On the same day, at 11:40 p.m. gunmen entered Carnes Asadas La Palma and killed four men and a pregnant woman.
The gunmen shot the five restaurant employees after they demanded 11 pounds of meat.
The federal source said authorities believe the restaurant owner was one of the victims, and that the gunmen asking for meat were demanding a protection fee, known as a “cuota de piso.”
Dec. 12: A young man’s body was found on Nayarit Street in the Jardin neighborhood. Later that afternoon, two young men were shot to death at the intersection of Donato Guerra and February 5 streets, a federal source said.
Dec. 13: A chase involving suspects left one person dead and another one injured in the Anahuac neighborhood.
