Semi-trucks have fallen victim to the cartels and armed gangs in Mexico for some time. Some are robbed for their loads, while others are used to make improvised road blocks while criminal organizations carry out attacks. The attacks occur daily in some parts of Mexico.

In the last year trains have fallen into the same category as easy prey. With little security and often traveling in vast areas, they have become easy targets for armed gangs to attack. Grupo Mexico/Ferromex, one of Mexicos largest railraods, has began paying government security forces to guard trains after the rise in armed robberies.

One of Mexico’s largest steel producers, Altos Hornos de Mexico, has been victim of nearly 40 robberies per year since 2009. Most robberies occur on one stretch of deserted road in northern Mexico between the cities of Monterrey and Monclova.

Over 10,000 semi-trucks were reportedly hijacked in Mexico in 2010. With around 18,000 US companies doing business in Mexico, the growing concern for lost product and employee safety is growing.

Many companies have added GPS to vehicles so they can track them. The armed bandits have upped their game as well, learning to disable the GPS devices or parking under bridges to block the signal while unloading goods. 
Northeastern Mexico is by far the most active for hijackings. Trains, semis, buses, and cars are easy prey in the vast highways that connect metro central Mexico to the borderland. Armed gangs which used to operate independently, have fallen under the jurisdiction of the cartels that dominate the rural territories they work in. Some cartels simply take a portion of the profit, while others directly organize the hijackings.

Semi-trucks and buses have been hijacked, wrecked, and rolled over to stop police from breaking up gunfights. The Zetas made this tactic famous in Monterrey when they were attempting to clear out the Gulf Cartel and other armed gangs from the city.
