Shots fired at Border Patrol agents on Rio Grande

September 3rd 2012   ·   20 Comments

EAST OF HIDALGO — Border Patrol agents were fired upon while patrolling the Rio Grande on Sunday night.

The agency had no injuries to report at press time Sunday night, but more information — including whether the agents returned fire — was to be released Monday morning, Border Patrol spokesman Enrique Mendiola said.

One vehicle was seen leaving the area on the Mexican side of the river after agents — both on the bank of the river and in a boat — were shot at after 9 p.m., Mendiola said.

“We’re reaching out to our Mexican counterparts to come to the area,” he said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to provide backup for the agents using helicopters and ground crews Sunday night, Mendiola said.

“Our agents were working the area east of the Hidalgo Port of Entry,” he said. “Boat agents and agents on the ground took incoming rounds.”

Mendiola said Sunday night he was waiting on more information about the shooting.

These pussy-willow rules of engagement ought to be disregarded by the Border Patrol and the business handled the way they’ve been trained. Getting back home to Family is the name of the game.
