Gulf Cartel Boss Nabbed in Costa Rica

A high level member of the Cartel del Golfo (CDG or Gulf Cartel) was arrested in Costa Rica Thursday, June 5th. Counter-narcotic officers arrested Juan Manuel “El Güero” Garcia Hernandez, who was in charge of much of the cocaine that the Gulf Cartel smuggled through Central America.
The cocaine shipments were being monitored from Panama to Mexico. The drugs likely originated in Colombia before they hit Panama.
Four other Mexican nationals were arrested, along with four Costa Ricans. Along with the arrests, authorities found 45 kilos of cocaine at a San José residence that apparently the suspects planned to send to Mexico.
The investigation began in 2010 after Costa Rican authorities intercepted several truckloads of cocaine. In 2011 police identified Garcia Hernandez as the boss of the group.
The Gulf Cartel is based in the Matamoros and Reynosa area, near the Texas border. The group has struggled to survive while fighting the los Zetas, yet has been reinforced by a pact with the Sinaloa Cartel.
The Gulf Cartel once oversaw the Zetas. The Zetas have since split, and became more dominant than their once employers. The Zetas are based in relatively nearby Nuevo Laredo. Both of the groups have trafficking routes through Central America.
