July 26th 2012 · 1 Comment
Gunmen killed three men at a hotel in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, officials said.
The shooting occurred at the El Eden hotel near the town of Cocula, located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, Attorney General’s Office spokesmen said.
The gunmen went into the victims’ rooms and opened fire, investigators said.
The gunmen fled in two SUVs before municipal police officers could arrest them, the AG’s office said.
The hotel is near the highway that links Guadalajara to the port city of Barra de Navidad.
AG’s office personnel and army troops cordoned off the hotel.
The motive for the attack has not been determined, the AG’s office said.
Jalisco has been dealing with a wave of drug-related violence for some time.
The remains of 18 people, including some who were beheaded and all of whom were mutilated, were found in May by a highway near Guadalajara.
Heads and other body parts were found on May 9 inside two SUVs abandoned at kilometer 25 of the Guadalajara-Chapala highway in the city of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos.
A message from the Los Zetas drug cartel threatening the leaders of the rival Sinaloa cartel was found in one of the SUVs, Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos police department spokesmen said.
Los Zetas, a band of special forces deserters turned outlaws, have been locked in a turf war in Jalisco with Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman’s Sinaloa drug cartel, which operates in the state via an ally, the Jalisco Nueva Generacion gang.
The bodies of 26 people were discovered on Nov. 24 inside three vehicles abandoned on a main thoroughfare in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city.
Authorities later blamed that slaughter on Los Zetas.
About 50,000 people have died in Mexico’s drug war since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon declared war on the country’s powerful cartels, sending soldiers into the streets to fight criminals.
